First announced in February 2008, the W980 was released in July of the same year. As of now, it has been discontinued.
The W980 is compact with dimensions of 92 x 46 x 16.9 mm and weighs just 100 grams. It uses a Mini-SIM and was available in several stylish colors including Piano Black, Opera Brown, and Violin Red.
Equipped with a 2.2-inch TFT display, the W980 showcases 256K colors at a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels, providing clear visuals and a decent size for a feature phone.
This phone comes with an internal storage of 8GB but lacks a card slot. The phonebook can hold up to 1000 contacts with 20 fields each, allowing photo calls. It also records the last 30 received, dialed, and missed calls.
The main camera is a 3.15 MP sensor capable of capturing decent pictures and recording videos. Additionally, there is a camera for video calls on the device.
The W980 features stereo speakers and supports various alert types like vibration, downloadable polyphonic, MP3, and AAC ringtones. However, it lacks a 3.5mm audio jack, which was common in phones during its time.
While it does not support WLAN, it includes Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and USB 2.0 connectivity options. It also features a stereo FM radio with RDS and an FM transmitter, providing a rich audio experience.
The phone includes an accelerometer and supports messaging formats like SMS, EMS, MMS, Email, and Instant Messaging. For browsing, it uses WAP 2.0/xHTML, HTML (NetFront), and offers an RSS reader. It also supports Java MIDP 2.0, enhancing its gaming capabilities.
The removable Li-Po 930 mAh battery (BST-38) offers a stand-by time of up to 370 hours on 2G and 360 hours on 3G. Talk time is up to 9 hours on 2G and 4 hours 30 minutes on 3G.
The phone's SAR rating for the head is 0.67 W/kg. Initially priced around 150 EUR, it was considered a mid-range option for users looking for a multimedia-centric feature phone.
In loudspeaker tests, the W980 showed voice levels at 70dB, noise at 75dB, and ring at 75dB. Audio quality tests revealed noise at -86.0dB and crosstalk at -86.3dB, indicating decent audio performance for its category.
