The Dell Aero is a smartphone that first made its appearance in 2010, featuring a sleek design that was quite compact for its time. With dimensions of 122 x 57.9 x 11.7 mm, it fits comfortably in one hand. Weighing only 104g, the Aero is incredibly lightweight, making it convenient for users looking for a portable device. Its body is built to house a mini-SIM, a standard that was prevalent at the time. The phone was available in black, embodying a classic look that could appeal to a broad audience.
The Dell Aero sports a 3.5-inch TFT display with a resolution of 360 x 640 pixels, offering bright and vibrant colors, thanks to its support for 256K colors. The display's 16:9 ratio and a pixel density of approximately 210 ppi produce sharp images and clear text. Even though the 47.8% screen-to-body ratio may not be impressive compared to today's standards, at the time, it provided a good balance between screen size and device portability. Additionally, the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, adding durability against scratches and minor impacts.
Under the hood, the Dell Aero is powered by a Marvell PXA310 processor clocked at 624 MHz. While this may seem modest by today’s standards, it was quite capable for handling basic applications and functions of its time. Running on Android 1.5 Cupcake, the Aero provides access to one of the earlier versions of the Android ecosystem, complete with basic smartphone functionalities such as web browsing, downloading apps, and customization features inherent in Android OS.
Photography on the Dell Aero is managed by a single 5 MP autofocus camera with an LED flash, enabling users to capture images with decent clarity. The camera also supports CIF video recording at 30fps, which, while not high-definition, was functional for typical video needs of the time. Although there is no front-facing camera, the primary camera fulfills basic photo and video requirements, making it suitable for casual photographers.
The storage solution for the Dell Aero includes a dedicated microSDHC slot, allowing for expandable storage. A 2 GB card is included by default, providing a decent amount of space for storing photos, music, and apps.
Supporting GSM and HSPA technologies, the Dell Aero is compatible with various 2G and 3G bands, including GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 and HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100. Although it’s discontinued now, these bands made it a versatile choice for international usage. Furthermore, the Aero offers a range of connectivity options including Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for wireless internet access and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for connecting peripherals such as headphones and car systems. GPS and A-GPS capabilities allow for location-based services, enhancing the usability of mapping applications. The device also includes a miniUSB 2.0 port for charging and data transfer.
One of the key components of any smartphone is its battery life. The Dell Aero features a removable 1000 mAh Li-Ion battery, providing up to 5 hours of talk time and up to 400 hours of standby time, which was sufficient for average daily usage in the era it was introduced.
The Aero includes an accelerometer and proximity sensors, which helps enhance its functionality by supporting auto-rotate features and optimizing display power management respectively. Its HTML and Adobe Flash Lite browser provides a satisfactory web browsing experience for text and simple multimedia content.
Originally announced in March 2010 and released in August the same year, the Dell Aero was positioned as an affordable entry into the smartphone market, with a price of around 230 EUR. While it did not achieve widespread acclaim, the Aero represented Dell's initial foray into the Android space, showcasing their capability in producing a simplistic yet functional smartphone in an emerging market segment. Over time, as technology advanced and consumer expectations grew, the Aero was eventually discontinued, becoming a part of the broader historical narrative of early Android smartphones that paved the way for more complex devices we use today.
